Roche Lays the Foundation Stone for a Future Diagnostics Production Center

Roche has begun construction on a state-of-the-art diagnostics production center in Penzberg, Germany, with an investment exceeding 600 million euros. In the future, more than 450 essential raw materials for diagnostic tests for the care of patients will be produced here in a highly automated and intelligent manufacturing process.

With the new building, Roche is increasing the long-term security of supply for in-vitro diagnostics and raw materials worldwide.

“Today, we lay the foundation for one of the most modern diagnostics production centers in Europe, aimed at enhancing our supply capacity to meet the needs of our global customers. With this significant investment, we will produce around 450 different ingredients for diagnostic tests starting in 2028. Our new production center in Penzberg will be a symbol of high technology and sustainability”, said Thomas Schinecker, CEO of the Roche Group.

Impact on CustomBiotech

CustomBiotech is set to enhance its production capabilities with one of Europe's most modern production centers. This strategic Roche investment allows CustomBiotech to even better meet the growing demand for raw materials essential for developing innovative therapeutics and diagnostic solutions.

The initiative supports the development and production of therapeutics and diagnostics across various segments, reinforcing CustomBiotech’s commitment to excellence in the industry.

The new production building will feature advanced digitalization and automation of manufacturing processes, enabling faster and more efficient production. The use of multipurpose equipment will allow for highly flexible manufacturing, accommodating the production of new and evolving diagnostic ingredients without the need for extensive modifications.

Construction highlights:

  • The building will have a gross floor area of more than 23,000 square meters.

  • It will incorporate over 1,000 photovoltaic panels and a biomass heating plant to ensure energy sustainability.

  • Expected to save around 7,800 tons of CO₂ annually starting in 2025.

Scheduled for completion in 2027, followed by a testing and qualification phase, the center is expected to commence production in 2028. This initiative underscores Roche’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and meeting the global demand for high-quality diagnostic raw materials.
